Hydraulic lift in three shrub species from the Chilean ...

May 01, 2008· The hydraulic lift in these shrubs showed seasonal differences (F (2,20) =601.1; P<0.001).In summer 2004, the amplitude of Δψ s was four times higher than in spring 2004 and summer 2005 ().The three species did not differ in Δψ s but did differ for soil water potential (F (2,10) =6.00; P<0.05). The soil water potential was higher beneath P. chilensis than P. cuneifolia and A. bedwellii.

Hydraulic lift and its influence on the water content of ...

Hydraulic lift, the transport of water from deep in the soil through plant root systems into the drier upper soil layers, has been demonstrated in several woody plant species. Here the volume of water involved in hydraulic lift by a mature sugar maple tree is estimated.

Adding a hydraulic log lift to my splitter. | Arboristsite

Jul 06, 2019· I am building my 4th splitter with a lift and some other hydraulic assists. I have always used a manifold for the two spools I need with the main valve being at the end. You probably will need some restriction for the lift and a set of small hoses. I have used as little as 1/4'' and worked well. You do not want your lift to move fast.

Hydraulic lift as a determinant of tree–grass coexistence ...

These results indicate that hydraulic lift can be an important mechanism responsible for the coexistence of woody plants and grasses in savannas. Grass facilitation by trees through the process of hydraulic lift could allow savannas to persist stably in mesic regions that would otherwise exhibit a forest cover.

Impacts of hydraulic redistribution on grass–tree ...

Jul 24, 2017· The hydraulic redistribution regime was characterized predominantly by hydraulic descent relative to hydraulic lift. We found only a competitive interaction between the overstory and understory, regardless of temporal time scale. Overstory trees used nearly all water lifted by the taproot to meet their own transpirational needs.

timbertool vs. tree jack (woodland forum at permies)

The ones I have seen most often are the small ones that fit into the tree itself and hi-lift jacks (very similar to your tree jack, and my absolute scariest mechanical tool of all time). My concern is less to do with the specific design, but the general principle of lifting a tree or relying on pressure from a machine of less weight than the ...

Hydraulic lift and water use by plants: implications for ...

Oct 01, 1993· During drought periods, sugar maple (Acer saccharum) demonstrates "hydraulic lift"; nocturnal uptake of water by roots from deep soil layers that is released from shallow roots into upper soil layers. Using standard water relations methods and stable hydrogen isotope analysis of both source-water and plant-water, I investigated (1) the magnitude and radial extent of hydraulic lift by ...

Hydraulic lift: consequences of water efflux from the ...

Jan 01, 1998· Hydraulic lift has been shown in a relatively small number of species (27 species of herbs, grasses, shrubs, and trees), but there is no fundamental reason why it should not be more common as long as active root systems are spanning a gradient in soil water potential (Ψ s) and that the resistance to water loss from roots is low. While the ...

Hydraulic redistribution in dwarf Rhizophora mangle trees ...

Introduction. Water movement from deep wet soil to upper dry soil (from high to low soil water potentials), using plant root systems as the water transport pathway, has been termed hydraulic lift (Richards and Caldwell 1987).Although this description of hydraulic lift indicates only upward directionality in water movement between soil layers, water transport can also be downwards (Burgess et ...

Hydraulic lift in a neotropical savanna

hydraulic lift. Hydraulic lift is the passive movement of water from the lower wetter layers to the upper drier layers of the soil profile via plant root systems. Since hydraulic lift was first reported (Corak et al. 1987; Richards & Caldwell 1987), several investigators have confirmed this phenomenon (see review by Jackson, Sperry & Dawson ...
